PROVEN LEADERSHIP
Continuing Medina's Vision
Who I Am
Hello, I’m Jim Shields and I’m running for Mayor of the great City of Medina. I am a lifelong resident of Medina, and have a lifetime of Medina knowledge and relationships. I am a graduate of Medina City Schools and later obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Miami University and Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Akron School of Law.
I have had the pleasure of acting as Ward 4 Councilman since 2001, including Chair of the Public Properties Committee. I am also the current Director of Human Resources and legal counsel for Medina City Schools for the past 24 years. I also previously served as Vice President and trust officer at FirstMerit Old Phoenix Bank in Medina. My focus is on service and community-oriented government.
What I Stand For
As I campaign, residents have asked me what I stand for, so here are some things I want you to know about me.
I believe in collaboration between government entities that increases efficiencies and saves taxpayer dollars.
I am a strong supporter of our safety services- police, fire, EMS. We need to take care of those that protect and serve us. My years on council reflect a record of commitment to ensuring the safety of the community and its residents.
I believe in a community - oriented approach to city government- everyone associated with the city is on the look out for how we can improve and maintain our city. Everyone associated with the City takes responsibility for the City.
As chair of Medina City Council's Public Properties Committee for 22 years, I believe in beautiful parks and high quality recreation programs that serve all ages of Medina residents.
I am fiscally conservative, but also believe in spending that delivers excellent services to our residents so they see the value of the taxes they pay to the city.
I will work with anyone and everyone that has the best interest of Medina, its residents and our businesses to keep our current momentum going.
Medina has an over-population of deer. We need to continue to utilize current reduction options and also add new options that will decrease the size of the herd and make Medina safer. There is a step by step process that the City is required to follow per the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR. The City is working on each step of the process to answer the deer concerns. This will continue if I am elected mayor.
I believe in finding common ground with those that I work with and I appreciate different perspectives and viewpoints that come together to solve challenges and improve our quality of life.
I will always value and appreciate city employees and continually thank and support our employees for a job well done. The City employees excel at customer service and that will continue to be what residents can count on if I am elected mayor.
I listen and I learn from every individual that I meet and interact with as I believe in kindness and decency toward others.
I will be responsible and responsive to our Medina residents.
I am dedicated to economic development that keeps our city vibrant and attractive to new businesses while also valuing and supporting our current businesses.
It will never be about me… it will always be about the greater good of the community.
